The Consell recognizes the vital role of culture to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda

REDACCIÓ PALMA, 12.03.2019.The Consell de Mallorca has joined in the declaration
"The commitment of culture with the 2030 Agenda" that has been approved today in
the International Relations Commission of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities 
and Provinces,FEMP. A meeting, held in Madrid, attended by thefirst vice president,
Francesc Miralles.

The declaration recognizes that the world of culture and its agents have a vital role to play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were set by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2015 and that make up the well-known 2030 Agenda. recognizes the transforming power of cultural expressions and their ability to transmit ideas, modify behaviors and improve the quality of life of people. Therefore, culture can contribute decisively to achieve a world based on equity, inclusion and sustainability of resources.

Among the commitments made by the members of the FEMP is to contribute to making cultural centers and programs environmentally sustainable and inclusive, as well as promoting a culture of sustainability in the cultural sector. For the first vice president and Minister of Culture, Heritage and Sports, Francesc Miralles, “Culture is a lever to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda. I am convinced that, after these elections, institutional culture managers will become true agents of sustainable development”. Today’s the last meeting of this term of the International Relations Commission of the FEMP. For this reason, a work plan for the next four years (2019-2023) that will prioritize, among other lines of action, ensuring the participation of local entities in the strategies to achieve the commitments included in the 2030 Agenda, facilitating the collection of information on projects that are promoted and the participation of local governments in national and international forums.

They also want to strengthen alliances and participation in international networks of local authorities -such as the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, CEMR, and United Cities and Local Governments, UCLG- and its members with the objective of advancing in the fulfillment of the Objectives of Sustainable Development (ODS).
